There are instances of nonhuman primate deception that occur to simply avoid punishment. In one instance, researchers observed a young baboon, in an attempt to prevent a physical punishment from his mother, looking intently to the horizon as if an enemy or predator was on its way -fooling his entire troop, including his mother, into frenzy and successfully escaping his punishment. Savannah baboons have been known to emit a predator alarm call when they are being chased by their parents or other dominant adults. Bonnet macaques (monkeys) will also emit alarm calls to prevent punishment or attack from an adult. In these cases, ________________________________ tricks the aggressor into thinking there is a predator nearby, which causes the aggressor to stop punishing or attacking the young primate in preparation for a predator attack.

The "Everyone's doing it" claim usually arises when we encounter a more or less prevalent form of behavior that is morally undesirable because it involves a practice that, on balance, causes harms people would like to avoid. Although it is rare that literally "everyone else" is engaged in this behavior, the "Everyone's doing it" claim is meaningfully made whenever a practice is widespread enough to make one's own forbearing from this conduct seem pointless or needlessly self-destructive. In the commercial sphere, practices of bribery, cheating, and deception are common examples. Other things being equal, we and others would prefer that no one act in these ways, but the practices are widespread and our failing to participate in them can ___________________________.

After cooking many of the dishes people said they made for themselves -and taking some liberties with them- we've concluded that what most people want is to ________________________________, but to a limited extent only. And this is true whether they are food professionals or work at something else entirely. While some true food maniacs are delighted to spend a few hours making sausage for themselves or boning and stuffing a chicken, most of us want lasagna from scratch, as appealing as homemade lasagna might be, but we will happily wash, chop, and cook something- as long as it doesn't go on too long. And it's quite impressive what you can accomplish in a short time without resorting to frozen or processed foods, microwaves, or takeout. After all, when it's just for one person, not four or six, there's that much less to do.
