While you are at work, you may dream about a month of Sundays, but your boss wishes for a week of Tuesdays. What makes Tuesday special? Monday is overloaded with meetings to “get things moving,” which aren’t very productive. Wednesday is “hump day” – just get over it, a worker thinks. On Tuesdays, employees hit peak performance because they are very focused on day-to-day activities. Also, Tuesday is usually the first day of the week that they’re focused on their own task. In 10 hours, they’re doing 20 hours worth of work.

Storing medications correctly is very important because many drugs will become ineffective if they are not stored properly. The bathroom medicine cabinet is not a good place to keep medicine because the room's moisture and heat speed up the chemical breakdown of drugs. Storing medication in the refrigerator is also not a good idea because of the moisture inside the unit. Some easily spoiled drugs do require refrigeration, but these should be labeled as needing to be kept in the refrigerator. Light and air can also affect drugs, but dark bottles and air-tight caps can keep these effects to a minimum. A closet is probably your best bet for storage of your medications, as long as you keep them out of the reach of children.

Suppose, on your wedding day, your best man delivers a heart-warming, moving toast that makes you cry. You later learn he didn't write it himself but bought it online. Then, would the toast mean less than it was at first, before you knew it was written by a paid professional? Most people would agree the bought wedding toast has less value than an authentic one. Although a bought toast might "work" in the sense of achieving its desired effect, that effect might depend on deception. That is, if you purchased a moving masterpiece of a toast online, you would probably cover it up! If a bought toast depends for its effect on concealing its origin, that's a reason to suspect it's a corrupt version of the real thing. Wedding toasts are goods that can, in a sense, be bought. But buying and selling them diminishes their value.

Under the right circumstances, groups are remarkably intelligent, and are often smarter than the smartest people in them. Even if most of the people within a group are not especially well-informed or rational, it can still reach a collectively wise decision. This is a good thing, since human beings are not perfectly designed decision makers. We generally have less information than wed like. We have sufficient foresight into the future. Instead of insisting on finding the best possible decision, we will often accept one that seems good enough. And we often let emotion affect our judgement. Yet despite all these limitations, when our imperfect opinions are gathered in the right way, our collective intelligence is often excellent.

The good news is, where you end up ten years from now is up to you. You are free to choose what you want to make of your life. It's called free will and it's your basic right. What's more, you can turn it on instantly! At any moment, you can choose to start showing more respect for yourself or stop hanging out with friends who bring you down. After all, you choose to be happy or miserable. The reality is that although you are free to choose, you can't choose the consequences of your choices. It's a package deal. As the old saying goes, "If you pick up one end of the stick, you pick up the other." Choice and consequence go together like mashed potatoes and gravy.

Just think for a moment of all the people upon whom your participation in your class depends. Clearly, the class requires a teacher to teach it and students to take it. However, it also depends on many other people and organizations. Someone had to decide when the class would be held and in what room, communicate that information to you, and enroll you in that class.

Someone also had to write a textbook, and with the assistance of many other people — printers, editors, salespeople, and bookstore employees — it has arrived in your hands. Thus, a class that seems to involve just you, your fellow students, and your teacher is in fact the product of the efforts of hundreds of people.

For its time, ancient Greek civilization was remarkably advanced. The Greeks figured out mathematics, geometry, and calculus long before calculators were available. Centuries before telescopes were invented, they proposed that the earth might rotate on an axis or revolve around the sun. Along with these mathematical, scientific advances, the Greeks produced some of the early dramatic plays and poetry. In a world ruled by powerful kings and bloodthirsty warriors, the Greeks even developed the idea of democracy. But they were still a primitive people. There were many aspects of the world around them that they didn’t understand very well. They had big questions, like Why are we here? and Why is smoke coming out of that nearby volcano? Myths provided answers to those questions. They were educational tools, passing knowledge from one generation to the next. They also taught morality and conveyed truth about the complexity of life. In this way, the Greeks were able to understand right and wrong in their lives.

On a Sunday evening some years ago, we were driving from New York City to Princeton, as we had been doing every week for a long time. We saw an unusual sight: a car on fire by the side of the road. When we reached the same spot of the road the following Sunday, another car was burning there. But this time, we found that we were less surprised on the second occasion than we had been on the first. This was now “the place where cars catch fire.” Because the same kind of accident occurred again, we were quite prepared to see it.

Food is one of the most important tools you can use as a manager. Having a full stomach makes people feel satisfied and happier. Eating together gives employees time to make connections with each other. Providing an occasional snack or paying for a lunch now and then can help your employees feel appreciated and make the office feel more welcoming. These do not need to be elaborate setups. If you have a small budget, you're not going to want to buy lunch at a restaurant for your entire group. Bringing in some cookies once in a while is enough; you can also encourage employees to bring in food themselves. The key to using food effectively is for it not to become a ____________________ event. If everyone knows you bring donuts to the Friday morning meeting, it becomes an expectation and not a surprise. To create goodwill, the food must appear to be

With the industrial society evolving into an information-based society, the concept of information as a product, a commodity with its own value, has emerged. As a consequence, those people, organizations, and countries that possess the highest-quality information are likely to prosper economically, socially, and politically. Investigations into the economics of information encompass a variety of categories including the costs of information and information services; the effects of information on decision making; the savings from effective information acquisition; the effects of information on productivity; and the effects of specific agencies (such as corporate, technical, or medical libraries) on the productivity of organizations. Obviously many of these areas overlap, but it is clear that information has taken on a life of its own outside the medium in which it is contained. Information has become a recognized entity to be measured, evaluated, and priced.

Alfred Chandler was Professor of Business History in the Graduate School of Business Administration, Harvard University. He was an economic historian whose work has centered on the study of business history and, in particular, administration. He long argued that this is a much neglected area in the study of recent history. His studies of big business have been carried out with grants from a number of sources including the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. His work has been internationally recognized, his book The Visible Hand being awarded the Pulitzer Prize for History and the Bancroft Prize. Chandler taught at a variety of universities in the US and Europe.

Pests and diseases are part of nature. In the ideal system there is a natural balance between predators and pests. If the system is imbalanced, one population can [decrease / increase] because it is not being preyed upon by another. The aim of natural control is not to eradicate pests and diseases. It is to [disturb / restore] a natural balance between pest and predator and keep pests and diseases down to an acceptable level. However, pesticides, another option to natural pest and disease control, do not solve the pest problem. In the past 50 years, pesticide use has increased ten times while crop losses from pest damage have doubled. Here lies the reason why natural control is [avoided / chosen] more than pesticide use.

Good managers have learned to overcome the initial feelings of anxiety when assigning tasks. They are aware that no two people act in exactly the same way and so do not feel threatened if they see one employee going about a task differently than another. Instead, they focus on the end result. If a job was successfully done, as long as people are working in a manner acceptable to the organization (for example, as long as salespeople are keeping to the companys ethical selling policy), then thats find. If an acceptable final outcome wasnt achieved, then such managers respond by discussing it with the employee and analyzing the situation, to find out what training or additional skills that person will need to do the task successfully in the future.

A turtle doesn't have automatic body temperature control like birds and mammals. Its temperature changes according to its environment. When it gets too cold, it digs a hole deep into the mud at the bottom of a pond or into the dirt of the forest. How can it breathe when it's buried? The turtle stops breathing air through its nose and mouth. Instead it takes in air through its skin and an opening under its tail. And when spring comes and the ground warms up, the turtle digs itself out and starts breathing normally again.

A snowy owl’s ears are not visible from the outside, but it has incredible hearing. The feathers on a snowy owl’s face guide sounds to its ears, giving it the ability to hear things humans cannot. Each of its ears is a different size, and one is higher than the other. The differing size and location of each ear helps the owl distinguish between sounds. It can hear at the same time the distant hoofbeats of a large deer, the flap of a bird’s wings above it, and the digging of a small animal below it. After choosing which sound interests it most, the snowy owl moves its head like a large circular antenna to pick up the best reception.
