실용영어(NE능률김성곤) - Lesson 6 A Search for Home

Saroo Munshi Khan was only five years old when he got lost somewhere far from his hometown in India in 1986. late one night, he got off a train at Burhanpur Station after traveling for hours with his older brother. Saroo was so tired that he collapsed in a seat on the platform and fell asleep. When he awoke, he couldn't see his brother anywhere. But there was a train in front of him. He thought, "Perhaps, my brother is on that train." So, Saroo impulsively boarded it. He assumed that his brother would find him and fell asleep again. He didn't know that this train ride would tear him away from his family for decades.

The next time he woke up, about 12 hours had passed. He searched the train for a long time crying out for his brother desperately, but he couldn't find him. After traveling nearly a thousand kilometers across the country, he arrived in Howrah, a city that is populous and notorious for its slums. Saroo wandered around the train station feeling scared and frustrated. He ended up living on the streets for a few months as he begged for food and shelter. Subsequently, he was put in an orphanage. There, in 1987, he was adopted by an Australian family, and he moved to Tasmania.

In Australia, Saroo settled down in his new home. He was given a new last name, Brierley. He adapted well to his new life, learning English and making friends. Nevertheless, the hope to find his birth family in India grew stronger. Every time he looked at a map of India, he would think that somewhere, among all of those cities and towns, was the place where he had been born. He couldn't remember its name, but memories of his hometown and his family remained fresh in his mind.

As he grew older, he started to search for his long-lost home using online maps and satellite imagery. Exploring with these technologies was like flying over the earth. At first, Saroo randomly explored the web or railway lines that led out of Howrah. However, the railways were seemingly endless, and he was left at a loss. To make the search easier, he roughly estimated how far he had probably traveled on the train. Using the time that he had been on the train and its likely speed, he calculated that he must have traveled about 960 kilometers to Howrah. He continued a painstaking search based on this distance. One day, in 2011, he discovered Burhanpur Station. Following the railway upwards, his eyes drifted across another familiar area and froze. He saw the water fall where he used to play. Then he spotted a three-platform train station with a big fountain. He had found Khandwa-his home.

Saroo visited India months later in early 2012. He traced his way back to Khandwa and followed his memories to Ganesh Talai, the neighborhood where he had grown up. However, when he arrived at his hold home, the door was locked and the house looked abandoned. Just then, a neighbor appeared, and Saroo showed a picture of himself as a child and asked about his family. The neighbor said that they didn't live there anymore. After a few minutes, another neighbor showed up. When he found out who Saroo was, he took him to a nearby house to let him see his mother.

At first, Saroo didn't recognize her. Likewise, his mother had some trouble grasping that her son whom she had pined for was right in front of her. But after a brief moment, he realized that her face was the one he had been trying to find for so long. Saroo reached out and embraced her. Saroo's mother couldn't utter a word, and tears streamed down her cheeks. A neighbor who could understand English translated his amazing journey into Hindi. Afterwards, he looked his mother in the eyes and asked, "Did you look for me?" She nodded several times. For many years, she had searched along the train tracks that led out of town. Saroo followed those same tracks back to Khandwa 25 years after losing his way and, finally, returned to his mother.
