Many people think of what might happen in the future based on past failures and get trapped by them. For example, if you have failed in a certain area before, when faced with the same situation, you anticipate what might happen in the future, and thus fear traps you in yesterday. Do not base your decision on what yesterday was. Your future is not your past and you have a better future. You must decide to forget and let go of your past. Your past experiences are the thief of today’s dreams only when you allow them to control you.

Talking about the kinds of jobs that you and your kid see every day — the restaurant owner, the doctor, the teacher — exposes him to the range of choices out there, and not just what he sees on TV. It also makes clear that everybody around him works to earn money, and plants the idea that one day he will too. If you’re a stay-at-home parent or are married to one, talk about the fact that this job involves many tasks, including doing laundry, cooking meals, and managing the logistics and budgets of kids’ activities — but it does not draw a salary. My point: Work takes many forms. Your kid will get it.

Researchers often use words familiar to them based on their experience and knowledge of the subject matter, but respondents may not easily understand these terms. The core vocabulary used in a questionnaire should reflect everyday language. In international studies, if the researcher is not too familiar with the language, he or she may use words that are found in mass media such as newspapers. Related problems in questionnaire wording are that if some but not all respondents understand a word or phrase, it may lead to response errors. Technical terms such as “derivatives,” “CAD” (computer-assisted design), “cognitive dissonance,” or even “Caucasian” are unfamiliar to many respondents. In a study conducted in France, the word “Caucasian” was interpreted as people from the Caucasus, a region in Eurasia.

When in a game, if you are reliving past plays in your head or focusing on something that will not take place until way later in the game, then you will not be prepared for now. And, now is all we have. Your sole job when you play is to be prepared for the present moment. What if they pass the ball to me? What if the ball is hit to me? What if the goalkeeper comes out? That is the proper present moment thinking. Even if you are not in the game at the moment, there is a good chance that you will get in. Will you be prepared? Are you actively watching and focused on the game and learning how to do the best job when you are out there, or are you simply wasting time hoping to be called upon? Teams and players have tendencies and you can learn a great deal by watching them.
